Discover the rules of this centuries-old card game

Manillen is one of the traditional card games that has been played for generations around the table in cafés, living rooms and at family gatherings. The game is a firm favourite
in West Flanders, where ION finds its roots. It is a game full of strategy, luck and good humour, where every card can decide whether you win or lose.

Whether you are a real card enthusiast or simply in the mood for a relaxing activity with friends or colleagues, manillen brings people together.

Number of players

Manillen is best played with 4 players in 2 teams of 2. You always play together with the person sitting opposite you.

Card game

The game is played with 32 cards (from 7 up to and including ace in each suit).

Purpose

The aim is for the team to score the most points by winning tricks with strong cards.

Basic rules

Trump suit: Before the start, a trump suit (for example: hearts) is chosen. Cards in the trump suit are stronger than cards in the other suits.
The jack of trumps and the nine of trumps are the two strongest cards in the whole game, followed by the other trump cards (Ace, Ten, King, etc.).
Deal the cards: each player is dealt 8 cards.
Lead: The player to the left of the dealer leads. Place one card on the table.
Follow suit: You must follow suit if you have a card of that suit. If you do not, you may play a card of another suit: a trump (strong) or any card you wish to get rid of.
Who wins the round: The player who puts down the highest card in the leading suit wins the round. However, if a trump is played, the highest trump wins.
The winning team collects the cards from the trick.
Scoring: After 8 rounds, tally the points. The team with the most points wins.
Each card has a value: Ace (11), Ten (10), King (4), Queen (3), Jack (2), and the remaining cards do not count.

The team that collects the most points after several rounds wins the game.
