Sustainability

A BTES (borehole thermal energy storage) field extracts heat from the ground to heat the new building.

 A large campus

The Vrijetijdscampus, or leisure campus, is situated on the land around the previous sports hall on Jonkershovestraat, spanning a surface area of 7.4 hectares. The existing sports hall and halls for judo and table tennis were renovated, ensuring they now meet the highest standards in energy efficiency, safety, and finishing. A new 500-m2 cafeteria was also built on top of the sports hall.

The existing building was supplemented with completely new multipurpose spaces for sports and culture, including a gymnasium, a tennis hall, and a small concert hall. The outdoor sports grounds have been renovated and expanded to include football pitches, a football stand with a canteen, and padel courts.

Close cooperation with the local council

Houthulst’s council entered into a strategic Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with ION for this campus. This partnership ensures the leisure campus’s facilities are optimised, contributing to the further development of Houthulst.

Houthulst’s leisure campus is the result of a collaboration between Houthulst’s town council, ION, construction company Furnibo, architectural firm A1AR and Planning, and engineering firm Lobelle, who joined forces for this ambitious project.

The Houthulst leisure campus is the epitome of a versatile, sustainable, and participatory approach to providing the community with high-quality sports and cultural facilities. As such, it is an excellent illustration of a successful Public-Private Partnership and an investment in the future of Houthulst.

The leisure campus is designed with sustainability in mind, thanks to various green initiatives, such as solar energy, geothermal energy, and passive cooling.
A striking feature of the campus is the red stone carpet connecting all buildings and outdoor areas, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor facilities.

Sustainably developed

The leisure campus is designed with sustainability in mind, thanks to various green initiatives, such as solar energy, geothermal energy, and passive cooling.

Sustainability is a common theme throughout the campus, with PV panels for power generation, a BTES field for heat extraction passive cooling, and solar water heaters for hot water production. These measures ensure that the leisure campus is highly energy-efficient and contributes to efficient energy consumption.

The power of collaboration: become one of our partners.
